OUR Center
Islamic Center of South Jersey (ICSJ), located in Palmyra, NJ, is a nonprofit organization serving the religious, educational, cultural and social needs of Muslims in South Jersey, NJ.
Our Center serves as a masjid (daily prayers, Friday/Jummah prayer, Eid prayer, collection and distribution of Zakat, Fitra, and Sadaqa funds), as well as a Sunday school, and a gathering place for the Muslim community in the region, offering various classes and programs.
ICSJ promotes closer cooperation and understanding among the people of all faiths and strives to contribute to the social, cultural, spiritual and economic betterment of the whole community.
ICSJ History
The history of the Islamic Center of South Jersey (ICSJ) is similar to many other American Muslim communities in the United States. Starting in the 1970s, a group of local immigrant families got together to worship and teach their growing families. Initially they would gather in their homes taking turns.
As community grew, they started to look for a facility to serve as a masjid and community center. By the end of 1980s, the existing building had been vacant for many years. Some of the early community founders would say, “Palmyra building was a gift to us”. After they purchased the property, renovation was needed to transform the space, and the beautiful tile calligraphy was added.
It is important to recognize that the story of ICSJ is a communal success – we are where we are today because of Allah’s grace and favor upon us, and the immense contributions, sacrifices and sincere intentions made by our many dedicated founders and community members.
